Sparq's Annual General Meeting Reveals
Emerging Results of the Infrastructure Build up and
Globalization Effort in 2001
sparq, (a.k.a. New Century InfoComm Tech. Co., Ltd., NCIC)
held its annual general meeting today. Operating revenue last
year registered some NT$1.112 billion. In addition, the company
generated about NT$1.806 billion in non-operating revenue.
In 2001, the company focused on building its domestic and
international infrastructure. Foresight and planning in 2001
paved the way for the establishment of the Shanghai representative
office early this year. This made Sparq the first private
fixed-line company to have a presence in the China market.
This office is aimed at serving the cross-straits telecommunications
needs of Taiwanese enterprises operating in China.
During the AGM, Sparq's chairman, Douglas Hsu, said, "The
Fixed-line business is likened to a marathon, which requires
large amount of time and energy. Infrastructure construction
is the mainstay of this race, and we made tremendous efforts
in the establishment of our infrastructure and bandwidth last
year. According to the experiences of developed countries,
such infrastructure gives new entrants the necessary competitive
advantage."
Hsu added, "In addition to the thrust on global arrangements
and the opening of the Shanghai office, Sparq was also the
first fixed-line entrant to obtain a 214 license in the US
in June. Sparq has also set up points of presence both in
HK and the US."
With regard to the 2002 business strategy, the business users
remain to be the target prospects, particularly those in Sparqs
on-net buildings. Significant efforts will be made on providing
intelligent data services and generating international voice
wholesale revenue. With the comparative advantage of the global
arrangement, Sparq is in a much better position delivering
the total solutions of world-class telecom services.
Last year, Sparq built its island-wide backbone, with regional
as well as access networks. 4.8m and 9.2m satellite antennae
provide links to a wide footprint in the Asia-Pacific and
parts of the US and Canada. As for submarine cables, Sparq
is an investor in both APCN2 and C2C. Such state-of-the-art
submarine cable system connect major countries in the Asia-Pacific.
Sparq is the landing party for the C2C submarine cable system
in Taiwan.
2001 is an important year for Sparq. Embracing its can-do,
smart, selective, fast and reliable attitude, Sparq has accomplished
many significant milestones. On February 14, 2001, the company
obtained its concession license. Sparq officially launched
its services on March 2, 2001, and in August last year it
achieved POI connectivity. December saw the opening of its
first customer outlet. In going forward, the company will
focus on building customer loyalty through its relentless
efforts in offering unique solutions and first-class customer
service to its customers.
